Clinical Trials of Smokers and Cardiovascular Events

The FDA notified health care professionals and patients in June 2011 that the prescribing information for the drug would be changed to effectively inform the public that the use of Chantix® may be associated with an increase of adverse cardiovascular events. The following month, the FDA communicated to the public that the label now has updated information about the use of Chantix® in patients with stable cardiovascular disease, information regarding patients and COPD, and alternatives to quit smoking.

The communication relayed the results of a selection of randomized studies. These studies were double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trials that consisted of 700 smokers. Each of the smokers had cardiovascular disease. Some groups were treated with Chantix® and some with a placebo. The studies found that while Chantix® was effective in helping patients to quit smoking, there was an increased risk for serious side effects, such as heart attack, stroke and sudden death, in the group that was treated with Chantix®.

The FDA is continuing to evaluate cardiovascular safety and Chantix®. It is requiring its manufacturer, Pfizer, to conduct an analysis of the findings. Read more about the serious side effects of Chantix® in a study titled "Risk of serious adverse cardiovascular events associated with varenicline: a systematic review and meta-analysis."
