FDA Announcements on Chantix® Labeling
The FDA announced in 2009 that manufacturers must put a Black Box Warning on the prescribing information for smoking cessation drugs such as Chantix® and Zyban. The warning highlights the increased risk for serious mental and behavioral events, including depression, mood swings, hostility toward others, suicidal thoughts and suicidal actions.
While Chantix® has been found effective in helping individuals quit smoking, the risks of taking the drug can be very serious. The FDA has relayed the results of several studies that were conducted between 2007 and 2009, and continues to receive reports of neuropsychiatric events in association with the use of Chantix®.
