Darvocet Law Suits

The generic drug known as Propoxyphene, used as a painkiller, has been on the market since 1950. In that time, name brand versions known as Darvocet and Darvon have also been released to the public and drug manufacturers have made millions of dollars from people who have taken those drugs. Studies have shown, however, that even when taken at recommended does, Propoxyphene causes significant changes to cardiac activity.

The most recent controlled human study of Propoxyphene, which had to be halted due to safety concerns for the participants, found that the drug slowed down the time between heartbeats an average of 29.8 milliseconds for a 600mg dose and 38.2 milliseconds for a 900mg dose. Any change in heartbeat by more than 20 milliseconds significantly increases the risk of cardiac arrhythmia.

In a 2008 report by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Propoxyphene was found to be almost twice as likely to cause death per 100,000 prescriptions as hydrocodone.

Over the past half-century, the drug's makers have failed to warn patients and doctors of its substantial risks, and they have done nothing to counter misinformation about the drug's effectiveness. These manufacturers deserve to be held accountable.
