After a Femur Fracture Related to Fosamax, Fight Back

The drug Fosamax is part of a family of drugs that is called bisphosphonates, which are usually prescribed by doctors for those who are suffering from osteoporosis. These drugs are supposed to increase bone strength, which will consequently reduce the risk of bone breakage. Studies have shown, however, that Fosamax and its generic form, alendronate, have been linked to spontaneous and low-impact femur fractures in patients taking the drug for more than five years.

At the law firm of Aaron M. Levine & Associates, our Fosamax attorneys have been the national leaders in recovering just compensation for families across the United States who have been harmed by defective drugs and medical devices. We have taken on pharmaceutical companies for more than 50 years and our track record is measured in thousands of successful cases and more than $80 million for our clients.

How Femur Fractures Happen Because of Fosamax Side Effects

Fosamax-related femur fractures have been documented to occur in patients engaging in low-impact activities such as walking, even though the femur is one of the strongest bones in the body. Scientific studies have examined how Fosamax causes femur fractures.

Though principally used as an osteoporosis treatment, Fosamax suppresses bone turnover, which can cause atypical, spontaneous or low-impact femur fractures. Bone turnover is the process where human bones constantly regenerate and repair themselves. As new bone cells generate, old bone cells are removed from the body. Fosamax causes femur bone breakage because it is designed to impede this bone turnover process in its treatment of osteoporosis.

By doing this, Fosamax allows bone-building cells more time to build new bone without removing the old. In the short term, Fosamax appears to be an effective osteoporosis treatment. However, in the long term, patients acquire a buildup of old bone, which leads to structural irregularities and damage. This accumulation of old bone has been identified in the studies as the potential root cause of Fosamax femur fractures.
