Learn About the Dangerous Side Effects From Fosamax
Those who have been harmed because of the side effects of Fosamax often have to deal with a great deal of damage and devastation. The drug is used to treat osteoporosis and suppresses bone metabolism. In some cases, however, Fosamax has been shown to have harmful side effects, such as osteonecrosis of the jaw and atypical, low-impact femur fractures.
At the law firm of Aaron M. Levine & Associates, located in Washington, D.C., and serving clients nationwide, our Fosamax lawyers have the experience to help you pursue compensation. If you or someone you love has suffered harmful side effects after taking Fosamax, we invite you to contact our firm. You can also report side effects to the FDA at www.fda.gov or 800-FDA-1088.
Fosamax Side Effects
Osteonecrosis of the jaw, otherwise referred to as "dead jaw syndrome", is very painful and can also result in bone disfigurement. The drug Fosamax, and its generic counterpart alendronate, can cause osteonecrosis by increasing bone density. If a bone gets much denser than normal, it can crowd out bone marrow, which contains the fat and tissue that stimulates bone healing.
Symptoms of osteonecrosis can include:
- Loose teeth
- Jaw pain
- Exposed bone in the mouth
- Severe mouth infections
- Swelling in the mouth
- Mouth ulcers and sores
- Death of jaw bone tissue
- Jaw joint collapse
In order to repair jaw bone damage, after the jaw bone deteriorates and dies, painful surgery is required to remove dying bone tissue. Since 2001, more than 2,400 patients have reported bone death in their jaws after taking a bisphosphonate medication - like Fosamax - to prevent or treat bone loss.
