$25.16 million, McCarrell v. Hoffman-La Roche, Inc. (March 2010)
In 2007, Andrew McCarrell, a 36-year-old computer manager from Alabama was awarded $2.5 million and an additional $119,000 to cover medical expenses for the injuries he suffered due to the use of Accutane. Roche challenged. On retrial in 2010, another New Jersey jury instead awarded McCarrell a $25.16 million verdict. Accutane caused such severe inflammatory bowel disease that McCarrell had to have his colon removed involving five surgeries. His symptoms included chronic diarrhea and incontinence. This was the first of about 5000 U.S. lawsuits involving Accutane in the United States.
$12.9 million Mace/Sager/Speisman v. Hoffman LaRoche (October 2009)
A jury in Atlantic City, New Jersey found that Roche failed to properly warn of Accutane's Inflammatory Bowel Disease side effects. The jury awarded a total of $12.9 million to the three plaintiffs, all of whom were from Florida. Jordan Speisman, 27, won compensatory damages of $8.5 million and medical expenses of $142,500; Lance Sager, 28, damages of $2.5 million and medical costs of $125,000; and Kelly Mace, 25, damages of $1.5 million and medical expenses of $128,000.

Actor Martin Sheen will be testifying on behalf of Actor James Marshall in a high-profile $11 million lawsuit against Roche, the maker of Accutane, in February of 2011. Marshall's colon was removed after suffering severe inflammatory bowel disease from Accutane. The serious side-effects and surgery derailed his career.
