Jack3d and OxyElite Pro, manufactured by Texas-based USPLabs, are dietary supplements sold as fat burning pills. Both became popular among fitness buffs as part of their workout routine. Both Jack 3d and OxyElite Pro contain DMAA (dimethylamylamine), a stimulant similar to amphetamine, and were promoted to increase workout energy and increase concentration and metabolism.
In December 2011, after the death of two army soldiers during routine training , the Department of Defense ordered all DMAA drugs including Jack3d and OxtElite Pro, off the shelves of GNC (General Nutrition Center) stores in all military bases. A study commissioned by the United States military and published in the Journal of Federal Health Professionals showed that “DMAA in combination with other ingredients may be associated with significant consequences.” The study results showed that soldiers using DMAA more than 80 days were 3-5 times more likely to have serious adverse events and those who had 2 or more serious adverse events were twice as likely to have taken DMAA. By April 2012, the FDA sent letters to 10 manufacturers of DMAA containing products , including USPLabs, warning that DMAA was an unlawful ingredient and could not be marketed in the US. In response to the FDA warning, all the manufacturers except USPLabs agreed to stop selling DMAA products. Finally, in April 2013, the FDA made a public safety alert warning to consumers not to use DMAA products as these could result in serious cardiovascular injuries and death. Under threat of enforcement action by the FDA, USPLabs finally agreed to no longer manufacture DMAA-containing Jack 3d and OxyElite Pro. However, it has been reported that GNC, both in the retail and internet stores, and USPLabs continued to attempt to sell the remaining DMAA Jack3d and OxyElite products to avoid financial loss. In August 2913, USPLabs agreed to destroy all remaining products contacting DMAA.
